Visit a beach nearby

Updated: Jan 8

There are more than 130 beaches in the Algarve, from Vila Real de Santo António on the border with Spain, through the most popular beaches, the most secret beaches until you reach Odeceixe on the border of the Algarve coast with the Alentejo. This is some of the nearest ones.

A very nice beach nearby is Praia do Barril (Barril Beach), a strip of fine white sand. You don't have to take a boat to go there. It is a slow train that take you to the beach or you can walk for 1 km. There is restaurant and bar at the beach. You will find hundreds of rusty anchors that attract tourists visiting the area. The anchors were left behind by tuna fishers when the amount of fish declined and the fishermen gave up their profession. No one really knows who started lining them up on the current location.

If you walk along the beach for 2 km you will come to Praia do Homen (Naked Mans Beach), a totally unspoiled beach that stretches for a further 3 km. A part of this beach is classed as an official nudist beach.

Fuseta, a nice fishing village near Olive Valley

Fuseta is a nice fishing village with many nice restaurants where you can eat grilled fish and meat. In Fuseta you will find two beaches, the inner beach of Fuseta and Ilha da Fuseta.

The inner beach is located at the lagoon. A beautiful bay with a beach bar (Borda d'Agua), sun beds and the characteristic old building of the lifeguard. It is a nice beach and a wonderful place to swim because the water is mostly calm and shallow. To reach Ilha da Fuseta you board a boat that will take you to a very long sandy beach on the ocean side.

Ilha de Tavira is located in the eastern part of Tavira Island. You go here by boat from Tavira. Here you will find tourist facilities including water sports, bars at the beach and boat trips through the Ria Formosa.

Praia de Faro is located on a small island called Ilha de Faro. It is near the airport and approximately 10km from the city of Faro. You can go here by car, by bus from Faro or by ferry from Faro marina. Stretching for nearly 9km, it means there plenty of room to take a stroll and find your own space. Praia de Faro offers all of the usual beach facilities like sun beds and parasols for hire. For the active visitors, there are several surf schools which offer surfing lessons and surfboards for hire.
