Visit an underground rock salt mine at Mina Sal Gema in Loulé. 230m underground, explore the mines walkways and see 230 million year old geological formations.
The Mina Sal Gema (rock salt mine) is now open for guided tours. The only Portuguese mine that is below sea-level to be open to the public, visits here are a fascinating adventure and one of the more unusual things to do in the Algarve. Travel 230m underground, where 45 kms of walkways and corridors criss-cross the mine, located beneath the streets of Loulé town.
There are 2 hour multi-lingual guided tours available everyday, Monday to Friday. The tours follow a 1.3km interpretation route through the mine. Your guide gives you insights into the current and old production methods and you get to see geological formations that are 230 million years old.
